Melons Australia's CEO Update

As we come to the end of February, on reflection our Melons Australia team has achieved a lot since our last Melon E-News.

We were prevalent at the Chinchilla Melon Festival, with a significant amount of work going into delivering melon masterclasses showing new and innovative ways to include melons in our everyday diets.

At the festival we officially launched our new Melon Grower Hero video, celebrating the hard work and expertise that goes into producing high quality Australian melons. The video can be seen HERE: (expertly produced by the legends at ShotPro).

We have been extremely busy preparing for our upcoming 2025 Melon Conference and 30th Anniversary event to celebrate the achievements of the Australian Melon Association, (trading as Melons Australia) and our industry! We look forward to announcing the venues and launching our registration/ticketing process for these events in the coming week – stay tuned and be on the look out for the email invite as well as notices in our socials as these are not to be missed events!

I welcome and note that it is as a result of great unity and collaborative lobbying that the Agriculture industry successfully advocated to knock out the proposed Biosecurity Tax. I also wish to report that Melons Australia continues to work with State and Territory Governments on the pathways to implementing food safety regulations – WA, NT and Victoria have been implemented on 12th February 2025 as per the requirements, while we continue to object to the excessive regulatory approach that was put to public comment in NSW and I am actively engaged with the QLD Government on a revised approach to their implementation.

Our 2025 Europe Study tour remains open for EOI’s, however these will be closing as of COB Tuesday 4th March 2025– so if you have an interest in attending, we need your forms completed and submitted ASAP! Here is the link - EOI.

Both Joanna Embry (Melons Aus Biosecurity and Projects Officer) and I attended the recent EvokeAg conference in Brisbane, which presented a fantastic array of future thinking problems and challenges as well as opportunities and possible solutions for Agriculture. We will look to utilise our connections and learnings from this in the work we continue to lead for our industry, including prioritising ‘common ground’.

As we look forward, we will be representing industry at the upcoming FoodEx Tradeshow in Japan in mid-March, and then involved with the Northern Australia Food Futures Conference in Darwin in early April. Exciting times ahead.

If you need any assistance or see opportunities where Melons Australia can support you, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help! You can contact me by email HERE or call me at +61 407 032 023.

That's a wrap! Chinchilla Melon Festival 2025

The Chinchilla Melon Festival 2025 was a huge success, drawing in crowds from all over to celebrate Australian melons. With exciting activities, fun competitions, and plenty of delicious melon treats, it was truly a festival to remember.

This year we were able to hold a series of sessions in the air conditioned Cultural Centre, where we had the pleasure of hosting Jemma O’Hanlon, renowned dietitian and nutritionist. Jemma took to the stage to share her extensive knowledge about the health benefits of melons, while also demonstrating some easy, nutritious, and delicious ways to incorporate them into everyday meals.

Shock Testing Expands into the Packhouse - Melon Quality Project

Shock testing started last September to monitor the impact of transportation on melon condition and has now expanded to include common packhouse machinery.

Over the past month, the project team have been using a simulated melon to monitor the shocks on the fruit through a standard washing and grading machine.

The data collected will help the project team understand the points in the washing and grading process that are most likely to bruise the fruit, to ultimately minimise the risk of that happening. The project team is also continuing to use the simulated melon to monitor the impact of acceleration on melon condition during transport from the field to the packhouse and from the packhouse to distribution centre. The data collected will help the project team understand where fruit can potentially be damaged at various points in the supply chain and what transport speeds and machinery settings will help protect fruit quality.

The simulated melon is owned by the Department of Primary Industries (Queensland), and has been lent to the project team to enable them to carry out this research.

Project Manager Mark Loeffen says, “Growers who have seen this technology are asking us to check various transport and packhouse processes on their farm to help them better understand where melon quality may be compromised before it leaves their farm. We are very pleased to see the strong interest from growers and their willingness to modify transport processes and/or machinery to improve quality.”

2025 Moshie Lean Leaders Applications Now Open

We would like to encourage melon growers and other members of industry to submit an EOI for the Moshie Lean Leaders program through the Melon training and Leadership program.

New Fact Sheet Available: Guava root-knot nematode

Guava root-knot nematode (GRKN, Meloidogyne enterolobii) was detected in Australia in late 2022. This microscopic pest, primarily found in tropical regions, has rapidly spread around the world and is among the most damaging species of root-knot nematodes (RKN). In Australia, it has been identified in residential gardens and commercial farms in the Northern Territory and a few restricted sites in Queensland. Its potential spread in Australia is uncertain, and its wide host range and lack of resistant cultivars mean that damage can be severe, making it more difficult to control.

The Guava root knot nematode identification and management (VG23007) project has been funded by Hort Innovation, using the vegetable research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government.

Industry Liason Officer Training Program - Sign up now!

Plant Health Australia (PHA) is offering a comprehensive and free Industry Liaison Officers (ILO) training program to ensure our industry is well-prepared for plant pest responses.

ILOs are essential during emergency plant pest responses, serving as the link between the Incident Management Team and the affected industry party.

Why you should attend

We need ILO’s so that in the case of an exotic pest incursion we have industry members at the ready who have the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively respond to biosecurity emergencies and support the melon industry. By attending the training, you will:
  • learn about the incident management structure and the critical function of an ILO during a response.
  • learn practical skills and knowledge to how an ILO can contribute to biosecurity response
  • connect with government stakeholders and plant industries.
  • develop skills and knowledge required to contribute to response planning.
  • recognise workplace health and safetythreats and steps to reduce risks.
  • build relationships and networks with industry stakeholders and jurisdictional staff.

A number of courses have already been confirmed for 2025 (see below with links to registration forms).

We would strongly encourage anyone within industry who is interested in assisting to strengthen our biosecurity system and help our growers manage the risk of an exotic incursion to sign up for this important and rewarding role.

If you have any questions or concerns or need assistance with the registration process, please contact the PHA training team at training@phau.com.au or contact biosecurity@melonsaustralia.org.au

New ACCC Horticulture Code Fact Sheets Released

The ACCC has released three new fact sheets to improve awareness of the Horticulture Code of Conduct. This follows enforcement actions against six horticulture traders for alleged breaches, resulting in 13 Infringement Notices totalling $185,600.

Two fact sheets are for traders, covering whether the Code applies to them and key compliance requirements. The third fact sheet helps growers understand their rights before entering agreements with traders. All resources are available on the ACCC website.

Horticulture Statistics Handbook

The 2023/24 Australian Horticulture Statistics Handbook is now available! In its 11th edition, the Handbook highlights the strength and resilience of Australia’s horticulture industry.
