Melons Australia's CEO Update

June 2025 has been nothing short of a landmark month for Melons Australia and our incredible industry.

We proudly hosted the long-awaited return of the Australian Melon Conference in Brisbane – the first in over seven years – bringing together more than 130 growers, researchers, and industry stakeholders. The event also marked a major milestone, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Australian Melon Association, a testament to three decades of collaboration, growth, and resilience.

Our team has been hard at work ensuring research, development, and extension (RD&E) efforts are aligned with the real needs and priorities of the industry. The momentum from the conference has only strengthened our focus on innovation, market diversification, and delivering value to our growers. We’ve also been working to secure industries access to various chemistries, largely through collaboration and data supported processes.

Later this week, we’re excited to send off our delegation for the Study Tour of Spain—the second of three international tours. Over nearly two weeks, participants will explore Spanish open field melon production, dive deep into supply chains, and discover the latest ag-tech and innovation in action. They’ll also connect with Spanish growers and RD&E leaders, building vital knowledge and networks that we’ll share with you in upcoming editions of Melon E-news.

While I’m away leading the Spain Study Tour, Courtney (comms@melonsaustralia.org.au) will be your first point of contact. I’ll respond to emails and enquiries as time allows.

As always, if there is anything that the Melons Australia team can support or assist you with please feel free to reach out.

Melons Australia Conference 2025 & 30 Year Anniversary Celebration

Over 130 growers, industry leaders, researchers, and supply chain stakeholders came together in Queensland for the 2025 Australian Melon Conference and to celebrate 30 years of the Australian Melon Association. It was our first national event in seven years and provided a valuable opportunity to reconnect, reflect on current challenges, and collaborate on the future of our industry. The discussions highlighted critical concerns such as rising input costs and stagnant prices, reinforcing the need for market access, stronger data-backed decision-making, and a more strategic, united approach across the sector.

Throughout the day, attendees explored potential future investments and activities—from expanding melon education and market diversification to improving fruit quality and building youth leadership. The need for increased communication, especially through social media training, was a strong theme, along with calls to review the current levy structure to support targeted marketing. The evening’s celebration honoured the legacy of the association and its leaders, while setting a forward-looking tone. A big thank you to all our sponsors and to Hort Innovation for your support in helping us deliver a successful conference and a memorable 30-year celebration.

Capturing the Real and Potential Benefits and Costs of On-Farm Biosecurity Measures (MT22008)

In its first year, the project focused on laying strong foundations—developing the research framework, building industry connections, and clarifying focus areas. Key achievements included early stakeholder engagement, preliminary research, collaboration with groups like AUSVEG and Melons Australia, and receiving the Peter Murphy Research Prize. Attendance at events like Hort Connections 2025 provided valuable industry insights and networking opportunities.

The team also worked towards securing ethics approval, ensuring the research meets proper standards and respects growers' rights. Moving into the next phase, a survey will be rolled out across the vegetable and melon industries to gather insights into current biosecurity practices and challenges, setting the stage for future analysis and adoption strategies.

Looking ahead, the project surveys is expected to begin in August 2025 and for more information, contact the following:
