Connecting melon growers to the future of industry investment

By Brett Fifield, CEO, Hort Innovation

For many melon growers, the current operating environment is as complex as it has ever been. Rising input costs, climate variability, labour challenges, and shifting market expectations are creating pressure on margins and confidence.

At the same time, the opportunities in Australian horticulture remain strong - if we continue to focus on what matters most on farm.

That is why at Hort Innovation we recently held our first annual Impact Update, a new grower-focused forum designed to connect industry investment directly to on-farm outcomes. Held alongside Hort Connections, the inaugural event brought growers together from across commodities and regions to share what is working, learn from each other and explore how investment across research and development, trade and marketing is supporting long-term profitability and resilience.

At its core, Impact Update is about making sure investment shows up where it matters - on farm. That means supporting better decisions, stronger margins, reduced risk and clearer pathways to market.

For melon growers, these fundamentals are critical. Whether it’s improving productivity, strengthening biosecurity practices, accessing new markets or building demand for fresh produce, the focus is the same: ensuring your business remains viable, competitive, and positioned for the future.

One of the most powerful aspects of the event was hearing directly from growers. Across the agenda, growers shared firsthand experiences of how investments are translating into practical outcomes - better decision-making, improved efficiency and reduced risk in their businesses.

These conversations matter. No two growing businesses are the same, but sharing real-world experience helps cut through theory and gives growers confidence to adopt new approaches that can deliver results.

Importantly, Impact Update also took a whole-of-supply-chain view of the industry. Discussions spanned the areas that underpin long-term success: productivity, driving demand and value, biosecurity and risk, and exports and market access.

This connected approach is increasingly important. Success is not just about production - it’s about ensuring your product is valued in the market, that your business is protected from risk, and that you have options when it comes to where and how you sell your product.

We know that staying focused on what delivers value on farm matters. Growers told us clearly that they want practical insights - what is working, where investment is making a difference, and how they can apply those learnings in their own business.

Impact Update is our response to that feedback. It is designed to remove barriers to participation, create space for knowledge exchange, and ensure more growers can access and understand the outcomes of industry investment.

Because ultimately, the value of research and development work is only realised when it is adopted on farm.

Looking ahead, staying connected as an industry will be critical. Events like Impact Update create the opportunity to collaborate across regions and commodities, strengthen relationships, and shape future priorities together.

For those who were unable to attend, we are committed to extending the value of the event beyond the room. More on-demand content, including panel discussions and grower insights, will be made available on the Hort Innovation website over the coming weeks. This ensures that all growers, including those in the melon industry, can access the insights shared and apply them in a way that works for their business.

Because while the challenges are real, so too is the opportunity, and by staying focused, connected and informed, we can continue to build a stronger, more resilient future for Australian horticulture.
