New research is showing how easily melons can be damaged during handling. Tests using sensor-fitted melons revealed that even a 100mm drop onto concrete can cause forces of up to 20g—enough to cause internal bruising. The project aims to help the industry reduce damage during transport and packing, ensuring better eating quality for consumers. The results will inform new handling guidelines to protect fruit throughout the supply chain.

The Chinchilla Melon Festival 2025 was a huge success, drawing in crowds from all over to celebrate Australia’s melon capital. With exciting activities, fun competitions, and plenty of delicious melon treats, it was truly a festival to remember.
AUSVEG is leading a trade delegation to exhibit at Foodex from 11-14 March 2025, securing a 54sqm booth incorporating Australia’s national brand. Export-ready, levy-paying growers can apply for part-funded positions to participate. The program includes supply chain insights, introductions to market players, and product showcasing to international buyers.
Melons Australia will proudly be flying the industry flag again at the 2025 Chinchilla Melon Festival, promoting melons as a healthy food source and celebrating the dedication and hard work of growers who make it possible for everyone to enjoy these delicious fruits. The festival is on from 13-16 February 2025.
An industry, in partnership with government organisations and private sector investment, created a project to reduce foodborne illness outbreaks from its products. The project was carefully designed with specific, measurable outcomes and key performance indicators (KPIs). The project included confidential microbiological surveillance with problematic results reported immediately to growers and processors so risks could be mitigated promptly. It also included support for growers and processors to increase food safety knowledge and affect behaviour change. The project succeeded in engaging with more than 99% of relevant growers. It reduced the number of food safety incidents in the industry to zero and the number has remained at zero for six years.
