Melon Meter phone app listens for ripe watermelons

A new phone app has taken the guess work out of choosing watermelons. Now you can carry a watermelon ripeness tester in your pocket, in the form of Melon Meter, a new app for iPhone and iPad. Melon Meter will guide you in your choice of a ripe watermelon. Turn on the app, place the microphone side of your device on the melon, press the red button, and knock on the melon until the app tells you to stop. It lets you know if your chosen melon is ripe or not.

The app uses software that analyses the sounds produced by the melon. The app's programmers claim that the app can assess the amount of decay in the melons by analysing the sound produced by knocking a watermelon.  At present the app only supports medium and large melons.
