Global Markets Initiative
The Global Markets Initiative (GMI) is a program bringing
together research, supply chain development and trade expertise in the
Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation.
The program works in partnership with business and industry to build
Queensland's exports. Based on the successful Asian Markets for Horticulture
Initiative, GMI assists business to develop profitable supply chains and
relationships in new and existing markets in a range of countries.
GMI has conducted projects with the mango, citrus, cut
flower and avocado industries. More information on these projects can be found
at http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/16_12000.htm
GMI has contacted the Australian Melon Association to
discuss the possibilities for export in the melon industry. This is an
opportunity for melon businesses that have already considered export for their
product. It is restricted to businesses that have their main business in
Queensland, although product can be exported from other states. For example, a
mango company based in North Qld that also grows large quantities in NT.
The business should have already considered export
opportunities or markets. GMI offers the following services:
Collaborating businesses are expected to contribute to the
export initiative but the Queensland state government, through GMI, contributes
funding and resources to the projects. Past projects have also received
voluntary contribution funding through Horticulture Australia Ltd.
Melon growers who are exporting or who are export-ready
should contact the Industry Development Manager, Dianne Fullelove to discuss
involvement in the Global Markets Initiative.
