Production
The Australian Melon Industry consists of approximately 300 growers growing approximately 217,000 tonnes of melons on 8,500 hectares. The major fruit types grown are rockmelons, honeydew melons and watermelons.

Melons are grown in all states and territories of Australia except for the ACT and Tasmania. There are about 12 main production regions. Each region has different climatic conditions, production systems, harvesting and packing methods, and market outlets. Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales are major producers with Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory producing lower but significant volumes.

Markets
Most fruit is marketed at domestic capital city wholesale fresh markets particularly Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. An export industry exists predominantly for rockmelons ie approximately 5% of fruit produced. In 2000/01 some 11,500 tonnes were exported to Singapore (30%), Hong Kong (35%), New Zealand (19%), United Arab Emirates (11%) and Malaysia (2%) (Source: ABS).
Only a small volume of fruit is sold directly for processing. No accurate figures are available for this market.
